Small communities could become the first to introduce 20mph speed limits in Midlothian after hundreds of residents called for restrictions.
More than 1,000 responses to a public consultation on speed limits in the county were recorded with support for the lower speeds clear, councillors have been told.
And a report on the consultation recommends the villages of Roslin, Pathhead and Auchendinny, together with hamlet Dewartown and the community of Eskbank as the first places to introduce the 20mph restriction.

It also recommends councillors consider introducing the lower speed in Loanhead and Bilston as part of the first wave of new regulations.
A meeting of Midlothian Council last week heard 175 people who took part in the consultation voted for a 20mph limit in Roslin, with 122 calling for it in Eskbank, 104 votes for Pathhead, 59 for Auchendinny and 56 votes for Dewartown.
Derek Oliver, the council's chief officer place, told councillors: "There is support for the introduction of 20mph speed limits within towns, villages and settlements."
Councillor Stuart McKenzie said many elected members will have had feedback from local community councils which also supported restrictions "particularly our rural areas".
And Councillor Pauline Winchester said of Roslin: "I was at a community council meeting last week where speeding was mentioned by them again.
"That is one of the reasons you have 175 votes from a small village."
Councillors agreed have a report prepared for February's meeting with an action plan setting out proposals to introduce the appropriate schemes in Midlothian.
