Midlothian teen soldier dies at barracks as police investigate 'unexplained death'

Police are probing the 'unexplained death' of a teenage soldier at a barracks just outside of Edinburgh.

The soldier is understood to have suddenly passed away at Glencorse Barracks on Edinburgh Road in Penicuik Midlothian.

Emergency services raced to the scene in response to the death of the 17-year-old boy at around 7.40am on Tuesday, April 25 and police say that they are investigating the incident.

Officers said that although there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances, they are currently treating the death as unexplained, the Daily Record reports.

A report is due to be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 7.40am on Tuesday, 25 April, 2023, police were called to the Edinburgh Road area of Penicuik following the sudden death of a 17-year-old male. The death is being treated as unexplained but there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

An Army spokesperson said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm the death of a soldier on April 25. Our thoughts are with the soldier’s family and friends at this difficult time and we ask that their privacy is respected.”
