Midlothian residents ‘trapped in their homes’ after major fire at historic building

A number of Midlothian residents have been trapped in their homes, with surrounding roads closed due to an ongoing incident "involving asbestos" at Newbattle Abbey.

Earlier today we reported Police had asked locals in the area to keep their windows closed and stay in their homes, as the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service battled a blaze on Newbattle Road.

We can now confirm the roads in the surrounding area have been closed, and the incident is ongoing with Police Scotland asking people to remain in their houses.

One resident said: "Whoa two incidents at Newbattle abbey today - a fire in the industrial estate and someone has had an accident in the woods.

"There are ambulances, incident vans, police and loads of fire engines.

"Out with the green angels in the woods so met up with police. The fire is in one of the old huts with asbestos - got told by police to get indoors."

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed the incident is ongoing - more as we get it.
