Midlothian locals woken by loud 'explosion' as burnt out motor pictured in car park

The aftermath of a burnt out vehicle has been pictured in a Midlothian car park after locals reported hearing what they described as an 'explosion' in the area.

A destroyed Seat was left behind as a mark of the incident which took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning, April 12, at a car park in Penicuik.

Locals were woken by the loud noise, with several reporting it sounded like an 'explosion'.

That morning, one local, who wishes to remain anonymous, snapped a photo of the destroyed car that was left on John Street, in a car park opposite playing fields.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that they attended the incident in the early hours of Tuesday morning, and left the site having made sure it was safe to do so.

The picture taken of the vehicle shows it burnt from the back end, as multiple reports suggested that there was a loud bang during the night.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 1.47am on Tuesday, April 12 to reports of a car on fire at John Street, Penicuik.

"Operations Control mobilised one fire appliance and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting one car.

"There were no reported casualties and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe."

Police Scotland were also made aware of the incident, but no further information has been issued by them at this time.

Locals also reported that there have been several incidents involving youths in the Penicuik area lately. with trees and people's bins having been 'set alight' recently.
