Midlothian locals bemused following 'mystery explosion' that lit the sky up orange

Residents across Edinburgh and the Lothians are left bemused after a 'huge explosion' was seen in the area on Thursday night.

With the incident believed to have originated in East Lothian, one eye witness from Dalkeith, Midlothian, described it as "worrying" after hearing a loud rumbling noise for two minutes before blue lights followed by a bright orange expolosion.

Several locals took to social media following the freak event shortly before 7pm on Thursday, January 26, but so far, no real answers have been found as to what the explosion was or what caused it.

A video also surfaced on TikTok of one resident near Fort Kinnaird shopping park filming the incident on their phone, where viewers can hear a buzzing noise and bright blue and purple lights followed by a orange glow in the clouds.

Elaine Brazendale and her daughter witnessed the whole incident and said she was glad someone else was with her at the time or people would have thought she was crazy.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live she said: "I expected it to be all over the news but nobody seems to know what it was or exactly where it was. I was just out walking my dogs with my daughter in Dalkeith and we heard a rumbling noise which sounded like a freight train.

"We were near the train tracks but nothing was coming. We then thought it would be a load of lorries approaching from the road, but it wasn't that either. The rumbling continued to two minutes and me and my daughter just looked at each other confused.

"Beyond the road, in a north-east direction, there were blue lights flashing and I thought oh my god, it's an explosion of some sort. It looked like a load of fireworks but much bigger. The dogs started to get scared as they knew something was wrong."

After witnessing the strange blue and purple lights for a few minutes, Elaine said the sky then turned a bright orange colour as if something big had blown up nearby.

She continued: "The sky then went orange and the noise stopped. It was between 6:50pm and 6:55pm as I remember looking at my watch. It looked to be in the direction of Musselburgh and Prestonpans. Some people suggested it was a sub station near Whitecraig but it wasn't that direction and there would have been a power outage.

"I just expected it to be on the news the next day. I have family in Musselburgh so I phoned them and they hadn't heard or seen anything. I then thought it could have been a rig or something out at sea, but I'd love to know what actually happened."

The video which recently surfaced on TikTok of the 'explosion' has also gained nearly 200,000 views, with users in the comments just as bewildered as Elaine as to what happened on Thursday night.
