Middlesbrough 'set to interview' Rob Edwards for manager job after Cardiff City odds slashed

Middlesbrough are reportedly lining up former Watford manager Rob Edwards to replace the outgoing Chris Wilder.

Boro announced on Monday morning that Wilder would be relieved of his duties following the Teesside club's 1-0 defeat by Coventry City at the weekend.

Wilder, who took over the post from ex-Bluebirds manager Neil Warnock last year, has seen his side lose five of their opening 11 matches this season.

It leaves Middlesbrough managerless, just like Cardiff City following the sacking of Steve Morison a fortnight ago. However, Boro appear to be moving swiftly to ensure that does not remain the case for very long.

The Telegraph report that Edwards, who was let go by Watford during the international break, is set to be interviewed by Boro for the manager's job this week. Bournemouth caretaker manager Gary O’Neil is also reported to be of interest to Boro.

The news comes after Edwards' odds to take over at Cardiff City were slashed from 9/1 to just 2/1 in recent days, moving him up into second favourite behind current caretaker boss Mark Hudson, who looks set to be given a fair crack of the whip to stake his claim for the post on a full-time basis.

On Monday, Hudson spoke of the situation at Boro, saying: "Wow. If I’m honest. When you retire and go into coaching you are fully aware of how tough an environment it is.

"There are not many managers who stay at one club for many years. You’ve got to do as well as you can, stick to your principles and standards and what will be will be. I’m gutted for Chris to lose his job. Bruno Lage went (from Wolves) yesterday as well. It’s volatile, we know that. Anyone who comes into it is fully aware of that situation."

Edwards and Hudson are the top two with the bookmakers for the Cardiff job, with former defender Sol Bamba in at 5/1. Craig Bellamy has ruled himself out of the running, despite being priced at 16/1, while he also said Cardiff could "forget about" other contenders on the list such as Nathan Jones, Scott Parker and Sean Dyche.
