A Middlesbrough fan has been arrested after he allegedly left his son in a hotel while he celebrated his side’s FA Cup win against Manchester United.
The fan was among the thousands in the away end of Old Trafford last night as The Boro defeated the Red Devils on penalties.
After the match, he is said to have left his 11-year-old child in the hotel room as he went into the centre of Manchester with fellow supporters to drink in the celebrations.
Greater Manchester Police said they looked after the child before an “unhappy mum” came down from the north east of England to collect him.
The man was arrested on suspicion of child neglect, the force confirmed.
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: “Boro away fan arrested for child neglect last night, after choosing to leave his 11-year-old child in the hotel after the game whilst he went into town celebrating their victory drinking.
“We have looked after the child with an unhappy mum on her way down from the north east to collect him.”
Premier League side Manchester United looked on course to secure their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup when Jadon Sancho put them 1-0 up in the 25th minute of the match last night.
But Matt Crooks equalised for the Championship's Middlesbrough in the 64th minute, which took the game to extra time.
Both sides then battled it out on penalties as the two teams failed to score during the additional 30 minutes.
Middlesbrough won the shootout 8-7 after forward Anthony Elanga missed the final spot kick for United.
