Palestinian man is shot and killed at a West Bank barrier near Jerusalem

A Palestinian man was shot and killed by Israeli forces on Sunday at a concrete barrier separating the occupied West Bank from Jerusalem, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

The ministry identified him as 26-year-old Imad Haroun Ishtayeh from the village of Salem, east of Nablus. It said Israeli forces shot him in a thigh in al-Ram town, and he was pronounced dead at the Palestinian Medical Complex in Ramallah.

Footage circulating online showed people carrying his body and climbing down a ladder that had been placed against the wire-topped barrier, while traffic continued to roll by and a horn blared.

Israeli police said the man tried to unlawfully enter Israel by crossing the barrier.

US says capable of resuming war with Iran as deal remains elusive

The United States warned on Saturday it was "more than capable" of resuming its war with Iran after President Donald Trump said any peace deal must adhere to his red lines, including Tehran never being able to develop nuclear weapons.

The White House had signaled Trump was close to a decision on a potential deal, though Tehran denied there was a final agreement on ending the conflict.

US sources had told AFP the deal was waiting on Trump's sign-off, but he made no decision after a White House Situation Room meeting on Friday.

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, while attending a defense summit in Singapore, said on Saturday that Washington was "more than capable" of restarting the war if necessary, adding "our stockpiles are more than suited for that."

US Central Command (CENTCOM) posted on X that American forces "remain present and vigilant across the region."

Oil opens up as US toughens terms of Iran war agreement

Oil prices rose as markets reopened Monday following weekend reports that the United States had hardened its negotiating terms with Iran to end the Middle East war.

US benchmark West Texas Intermediate gained 2.5 percent to $89.60 a barrel.

Brent North Sea crude, meanwhile, was trading around $93.16 a barrel for August delivery, a rise of about 2.2 percent from Friday's close.

The increase follows a week where crude prices dropped over 11 percent amid hopes that an imminent peace agreement would lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the global oil supply transits.

Over the weekend, however, The New York Times and other US media reported US President Donald Trump had sent back a new version of a possible memorandum of understanding to Tehran with several tightened negotiating points.

What to know as Israeli forces' historic Lebanon incursion complicates an Iran deal

Israeli forces are making their deepest incursion inside Lebanon since they withdrew from the country over a quarter-century ago, despite a nominal US-brokered ceasefire and the first direct talks between the countries in decades.

The Israeli advance presents a challenge in the emerging deal to extend the Iran war ceasefire as Tehran wants any agreement to end fighting in Lebanon, too. Qatar called it a “dangerous escalation." Germany's foreign minister said it was cause for serious concern, according to German press agency dpa. There was no comment by the United States.

On Sunday, Israeli forces seized a symbolic fort in southern Lebanon that offers commanding views across Lebanon and into northern Israel. The last time they seized it, they held it for 18 years.

Israel says it is targeting the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group, which has a strong political presence in southern Lebanon and has launched thousands of missiles and drones at Israeli soldiers there and in northern Israel.

Israel has warned Lebanese civilians across the south to evacuate or risk being in the line of fire. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Saturday accused Israel of “implementing a policy of total destruction of cities and towns.”

Iran says does not trust US as Trump toughens terms

Iran's chief negotiator warned on Sunday the United States was not to be trusted, saying Tehran would not agree to any deal with Washington unless it fully secured Iranian rights.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf's remarks came as reports emerged that US President Donald Trump had sent a tougher peace proposal back to Iran, and underlined the rift that the parties still need to close.

Any tweaks to the draft could further delay an agreement to formally end the Middle East war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz after weeks of fraught negotiations marked by sharp rhetoric and occasional flare-ups of violence.

Iran was already in talks with the United States about the fate of its nuclear programme in February when the US and Israel launched air and missile strikes that wiped out much of the Islamic republic's senior leadership.

And, while Tehran has long insisted that its nuclear programme is for purely civilian ends, the United States and its Western allies suspect it aims to develop a weapon.

British foreign minister calls for end to Israeli military action in Lebanon

The Israeli military's escalation of activities in Lebanon has led to civilians being killed and displaced, destroyed infrastructure and eroded space for diplomacy and it must end, British Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper said on Sunday.

"All sides must respect the ceasefire and engage with negotiations in good faith," Cooper said in a post on X, adding that Hezbollah must also end its attacks on Israel.

Israel PM says capturing Beaufort 'dramatic shift' in Lebanon offensive

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to push deeper into Lebanon after his military took over the medieval castle of Beaufort on Sunday, calling it a "dramatic shift" in the campaign against Hezbollah.

The Iran-backed militant group, meanwhile, said it targeted Israeli forces near the fortress as well as army positions and infrastructure in Shlomi and Nahariya in northern Israel, while air raid sirens blared in the Acre area.

Israel pursued its strikes on Lebanon, with eight people were killed in a strike on Deir Zahrani in southern Lebanon on Sunday including three women, according to the Lebanese health ministry.

As fighting escalated in Lebanon, diplomatic sources told AFP that the United Nations Security Council would hold an emergency meeting Monday over Israel's expansion of its offensive in the country.

The meeting was requested by France, whose President Emmanuel Macron said "nothing justifies the major escalation under way in south Lebanon", calling for an end to fighting "for good".

Germany says Israel's Lebanon offensive 'cause for serious concern'

The Israeli army's push further into southern Lebanon is cause for serious concern, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has said in a statement, urging all sides to cease hostilities.

"The Israeli army's advance further into southern Lebanon is cause for serious concern," the statement said, adding: "Any further escalation will exacerbate the already tense situation and trigger new waves of displacement within Lebanon."

NYC Mayor Mamdani to skip annual parade celebrating Israel, pledges big police presence

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will not attend an annual parade honoring Israel later today, breaking with a decades-long political custom because of his support of Palestinian rights, AP reports.

Though it has gone by different names over the years, the Israel Day parade has always been a must-attend event for mayors, governors and other political leaders eager to win over the throngs of flag-waving revelers who congregate on Fifth Avenue to celebrate the birth of the Jewish state in 1948.

Not so for Mamdani.

Two weeks ago the mayor's office released a video commemorating the Nakba, an Arabic word for “catastrophe” that is used to describe the displacement of an estimated 700,000 Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war that followed Israel’s establishment.

“I said on the campaign trail that I wouldn’t be attending the parade, and I’ve made my views on the Israeli government abundantly clear,” Mamdani said at a news conference Thursday.

But he also promised a robust police presence to make sure it went off “seamlessly and peacefully.”

Israel authorities say 2 wounded, suspect killed in ramming attack

A vehicle rammed into a group of Israeli civilians in the occupied West Bank, wounding two teenagers, with the suspected attacker killed by a soldier, Israeli authorities said.

The incident occurred in the area of Gush Junction in the southern West Bank.

Israel's emergency service Magen David Adom said its medics evacuated two teenage girls to a hospital in Jerusalem after the attack.

"Paramedics are treating a 17-year-old girl in serious condition with injuries to her limbs and a 15-year-old girl in moderate condition with a facial injury," MDA said.

France's Macron says 'nothing justifies' south Lebanon escalation

"Nothing justifies the major escalation under way in south Lebanon," French President Emmanuel Macron has said in a post on X, calling for an end to fighting "for good".

After speaking with regional leaders, Macron said it was "essential" for an agreement to be reached quickly between the United States and Iran.

UN Security Council to hold emergency meeting on Lebanon on Monday

The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting Monday over Israel's expansion of its offensive in Lebanon, following the capture of the medieval castle of Beaufort, diplomatic sources told AFP.

The meeting was requested by France and will take place immediately after an emergency meeting over the crash of a Russian drone into a Romanian apartment building, which is scheduled for 3:00 pm (1900 GMT), the sources said.

Palestinian man shot and killed at West Bank barrier near Jerusalem

A Palestinian man was shot and killed by Israeli forces at a concrete barrier separating the occupied West Bank from Jerusalem, the Palestinian Health Ministry has said.

The ministry identified him as 26-year-old Imad Haroun Ishtayeh from Salim town, east of Nablus.

Ishtayeh was apparently attempting to cross from the West Bank to Israel. Many people have been shot trying to cross the barrier, including a 44-year-old father who was killed earlier this month.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards attack separatists in northern Iraq

The ground forces of Iran's Revolutionary Guards have attacked the bases of separatist groups in northern Iraq, Iranian state media have said.

It was not clear which specific locations had been attacked.

Analysis: Netanyahu trying to save his reputation with Beaufort castle capture

Israeli troops have captured a strategic mountain topped with a Crusader-built castle in southern Lebanon in the deepest incursion into the country in more than a quarter-century.

"The fortress holds a really major and traumatic position in the Israeli public sphere. The withdrawal of Israeli soldiers 26 years ago from Beaufort was such a national trauma that it became a major film that won prizes in Europe," says FRANCE 24's Jerusalem correspondent Noga Tarnopolsky.

Lebanon says Israeli strike near hospital in south wounds 13 staffers

An Israeli strike near a hospital in Tyre, south Lebanon wounded 13 staffers, the Lebanese health ministry said, as Israel pushes forward its offensive deeper into the country.

"The Israeli enemy launched an airstrike in the vicinity of Hiram Hospital in Tyre, injuring 13 hospital staff members and causing significant damage," the ministry said in a statement, urging "the international community to put an end to the escalating and expanding Israeli attacks".

Israel's Netanyahu says capturing Beaufort a 'dramatic shift' in Lebanon offensive

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared Sunday that Israeli forces' capture of Beaufort castle in southern Lebanon marked a "dramatic shift" in Israel's campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

"Today, we have returned to Beaufort in a different way. We have returned united, determined, and stronger than ever," Netanyahu said in a video statement.

"The capture of Beaufort is a dramatic stage and a dramatic shift in the policy we are leading. We have broken the barrier of fear. We are taking the initiative, we are operating on all fronts -- in Syria, in Gaza, in Lebanon."

France requests UN Security Council 'emergency meeting' on Lebanon

France has requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council after Israeli forces seized the medieval Beaufort castle in Lebanon, the French foreign minister said Sunday.

"I have requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council because, while we recognise Israel's right, like that of all countries, to self-defence... nothing can justify the continuation of Israeli military operations in Lebanon and its ever-deeper occupation of Lebanese territory," Jean-Noel Barrot said on the BFMTV channel.

Yesterday's key events:

  • Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam denounced what he called a dangerous Israeli escalation in the south, urging an immediate ceasefire and insisting that a "scorched-earth policy" would not ensure Israel's security.

  • An adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader ‌Mojtaba Khamenei, said that US President Donald Trump was "betraying ‌diplomacy for the third ‌time" by continuing a naval blockade imposed on Iran and making what he described as excessive demands in negotiations.

  • The United States has more than sufficient stockpiles of weapons and is "more than capable" of resuming the war with Iran, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said in Singapore on Saturday.
