A surgical team in Japan faced an extraordinary nightmare when a powerful earthquake struck while an operation was underway. Hospital cameras captured the operating room as violent tremors shook the medical team and equipment, with surgeons suddenly dealing with a disaster while a patient remained on the operating table and could not simply move to safety.

The dramatic scenes unfolded after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southwestern Japan on 28 July 2026. The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded the quake at 4:27 pm local time, with maximum seismic intensity of 7 in parts of Kumamoto. The event was strong enough to cause major disruption across the region, including power failures, damaged buildings and emergency medical responses.
