Microwave cleaning tips? Try these easy household hacks to remove food stains, grease and bad odours

Microwaves can quickly collect food splatters, grease and lingering smells from everyday cooking. Instead of relying on expensive cleaners, a few simple household ingredients can help loosen stubborn residue and keep your microwave fresh and clean.

Dish Soap and Warm Water

Use a soft cloth or sponge dipped in soapy water to clean greasy spots and food splatters from the microwave interior.

Lemon for Bad Odours

Heating lemon in water can help neutralise lingering smells from strongly flavoured foods.

Clean the Turntable

Remove the glass plate and wash it separately with warm water and dish soap to remove grease and food particles.

Wipe the Door and Seals

Use a damp microfiber cloth to clean the microwave door, edges and seals where dirt and food residue can accumulate.

Warm Damp Cloth

For light everyday cleaning, place a damp microfiber cloth inside the microwave and heat it briefly. Allow the steam to loosen splatters, then wipe the surfaces.

Clean the Microwave Ceiling

Food particles often stick to the top interior surface. Use a damp cloth to wipe away softened grease and splatters.

Clean After Spills

Wipe food spills as soon as the microwave cools down. Fresh residue is much easier to remove than dried-on stains.

Clean the Vent Area Carefully

Dust can accumulate around exterior ventilation areas. Wipe the accessible surface gently with a dry or slightly damp cloth without allowing moisture into the vents.

Things To Avoid While Cleaning a Microwave

  • Do not spray cleaner directly inside – Spraying liquid into the microwave can allow moisture to reach electrical components. Apply cleaner to a cloth instead.
  • Avoid abrasive scrubbers – Steel wool, rough scouring pads and harsh scrubbers can scratch the microwave’s interior and damage its surface.
  • Do not use excessive water – A soaked cloth can leave too much moisture inside the appliance. Use a damp, well-wrung cloth.
  • Never clean a hot microwave – Allow the appliance and turntable to cool before cleaning to avoid burns or thermal shock.
  • Avoid harsh chemical cleaners – Strong chemicals may leave residues and unpleasant fumes inside the appliance.
  • Do not forget to unplug it – When cleaning the exterior or handling removable parts, unplug the microwave first for added safety.
