Microsoft has announced the “world’s first pizza-scented Xbox controllers”.
Why? It’s part of a tie-in with the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem film, showing in cinemas from July 31.
The pad looks much like a normal Xbox controller with an “ooze green” Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles paint job at first. But then you notice the big plastic slice of pizza attached to the back.
This is a diffuser, which fires out pizza scent to make any room smell like the aftermath of a Dominos takeaway delivery.
Judging by the promotional images, there’s a button on top of the fake pizza slice that sprays scent, rather than using an outlandish automatic mechanism that sprays whenever you press the X button, or similar.
The good news is this pizza diffuser can be removed, as images released by the Microsoft Xbox team show the controller without the diffuser attached.
The bad news is the Turtles controller is only available as part of an exclusive Xbox competition at present.
To enter, you have to follow Xbox Game Pass on Twitter — assuming it is still called that by the time your read this — and retweet the competition tweet. The competition runs until August 13, and UK folks are eligible.
However, the chances of winning seem slim as the tweet has already been retweeted over 15,000 times, and the Xbox team is only giving away four controllers. Each of these is bundled with a 3-month voucher for Game Pass Ultimate and a “customized pizza-scent liquid fragrance” bottle worth $5.
There are four pads because there are four designs, one for each of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael. We’ve asked for confirmation from Xbox whether the pads will eventually go on sale, with or without the pizza attachment, but are yet to hear back.
While there is no Xbox game adaptation of the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem movie, turtles fans can try out the highly praised arcade brawler Shredder’s Revenge on the console. It was released in 2022 and is available to play through Xbox Game Pass.
A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem turtles “immersive trailer” has been published within Roblox, but the playable Battle Tycoon component won’t be unlocked until August 2, the film’s official release date.
