Micro review: 'Sisterhood Economy: Of, By, For Wo(men)' by Shaili Chopra

Highlights

Journalist, entrepreneur, and founder of SheThePeople, Shaili Chopra is back with her new book 'Sisterhood Economy: Of, By, For Wo(men)'. In this book, Chopra tries to decode women's economy, how women are contributing to it, where is it untapped, and how their work approach and attitude can help uplift the country.

"How can India catapult into a superpower? Simply by treating its women better," Chopra says in her book 'Sisterhood Economy'. She further states, "As per Mckinsey, the country could add up to $770 billion- more than 18%- to its GDP by 2025, simply by giving equal opportunities to women." But why is it that though more women are being educated today, there are fewer jobs taken up by them? Or we generally categorise women in three slots-- bitch, badass, or bechari? Are the parents, in-laws or patriarchy to blame for women not earning or being independent? Chopra speaks to women from different walks of life to understand the issue better. In the process she also captures some inspiring stories of women who are bringing a change in such attitudes. And she also questions how women in power and politics can help bring a change for the betterment of Sisterhood.

"The world is recognising how female leadership changed the fate of countries handling COVID. When men lost jobs, women kept home fires on – some through housework, many through self-created jobs and businesses. If India has to grow and expand its demographic dividend, it has to count the female factor and rethink how it leverages its 700 million women into powering an economy the world is watching," reads the book's blurb.

The book is written in a simple and easy language, which makes it a good read. In this book, Chopra touches upon a wide range of themes and examines them with case studies, data, and interviews. This is a timely and thought-provoking book, not just for women but all readers.
