Michoacán: Nine Suspected CJNG Operatives Fall, But the Cell's Boss Is Still Missing

Mexican Army personnel secure the area where the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) leader known as "R1" was captured in Atotonilco el Alto, Jalisco state, Mexico, on July 30, 2026. Mexico said on July 30 it had captured the alleged mastermind behind the assassination of a hardline anti-crime mayor last November, a killing that sparked international outrage (Credit: Photo by ULISES RUIZ / AFP via Getty Images)

Shortly before dawn on Wednesday, August 19, a joint deployment of the Army, Navy, National Guard, the Secretariat of Security and Civilian Protection, and the Attorney General's Office moved into the communities of Tinaja de Vargas and Colesio, in the municipalities of Tanhuato and Ecuandureo, Michoacán. The immediate result: nine people identified as members of a cell tied to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) were taken into federal custody, according to the official tally reported by Univision/N+.

Hours before the details became public, President Claudia Sheinbaum had already told reporters at her morning briefing that a priority target — or several — was being pursued that same morning, and promised that the Security Cabinet would release further details later in the day, according to El Informador.
