Michigan State lost their top spot in college hockey’s rankings after mustering a split in Madison last weekend. Falling to No. 3 in the polls, the Spartans were given an opportunity to immediately bounce back against the new No. 1 team in the land, the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
On Friday, the first game in a two game weekend series in Minneapolis, the Spartans and Golden Gophers played a highly competitive hockey game that two of the nation’s best should be playing in.
Friday night’s game resulted in an official 3-3 tie, after no one converted in an overtime period, but the game would then be decided by a shootout. In the shootout, it was a 2-0 Spartans victory.
The two teams will conclude their weekend series on Saturday night.
