Michigan State will continue its season without Jeremy Fears for the foreseeable future after the freshman guard sustained a leg injury in an off-campus incident.
The university announced Saturday that Fears suffered the injury after he was shot near his hometown of Joliet, Ill., according to the Detroit Free Press. The details surrounding the shooting currently remain unknown, though MSU confirmed Fears’s leg injury is believed to be non-life threatening.
Spartans coach Tom Izzo later shared a statement with an update on the guard’s condition, confirming that Fears is currently without a timeline for return and after undergoing surgery.
“Jeremy underwent surgery this morning and is resting comfortably,” Izzo told the media, per the Press. “While there is much we still don’t know, my focus is supporting Jeremy on his road to recovery.”
Fears posted a picture of himself after surgery to his Instagram account on Saturday with an encouraging message.

Saturday’s news comes just two days after Fears’s last appearance in MSU’s 99–55 win over Stony Brook, the team’s last game until a Dec. 30 clash against Indiana State.
A top 35 recruit in the Class of 2023, Fears has averaged 3.5 points and 3.3 assists on 15.3 minutes per game in 12 appearances.
