Michigan State Announces Intention to Fire Mel Tucker For Cause

Michigan State has begun the process of firing football coach Mel Tucker for cause amid a sexual harassment investigation.

MSU athletic director Alan Haller released a statement detailing the firing process.

“I, with the support of administration and board, have provided Mel Tucker with written notice of intent to terminate his contract for cause. This notification process is required as part of his existing contract. The notice provides Tucker with seven calendar days to respond and present reasons to me and the interim president as to why he should not be terminated for cause.”

The sexual harassment complaint was made by Brenda Tracy, a sexual assault survivor who frequently works with sports teams on training related to sexual violence.

Tucker allegedly masturbated during a phone call with Tracy while making lewd comments about her on April 28, 2022. The pair previously had established a working relationship, with Tracy speaking to Tucker’s team twice and serving as an honorary captain at the Spartans’ spring game in April 2022.

Since the allegations became public on Sept. 10, Tucker has been suspended without pay by Michigan State

Tucker has denied any wrongdoing ahead of a university hearing on the matter, which begins on Oct. 5.
