Michigan Prosecutors Seek 10-Year Sentence For School Shooter's Parents

Aftermath of shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan

In recently filed court documents, Michigan prosecutors are seeking a minimum 10-year prison sentence for the parents of school shooter Ethan Crumbley. The prosecutors allege that the parents have displayed a 'chilling lack of remorse' following their conviction for involuntary manslaughter.

The prosecutors have requested the judge to sentence each parent to 10 to 15 years in state prison, as per two separate sentencing memorandums dated April 3. In an unusual move, excerpts from pre-sentencing investigation reports and statements from the defendants were released by the prosecutors.

According to the prosecutors, Crumbley's father has made repeated threats towards the prosecuting attorney and expressed intentions of 'retribution.' The sentencing memorandum for James Crumbley highlights his lack of remorse, tendency to blame others, and threats towards the prosecutor. James Crumbley referred to himself as a 'martyr' and claimed persecution.

In a pre-sentence investigation report, James Crumbley expressed feeling 'absolutely horrible' and devastated by the events. He mentioned a desire to change the past and take different actions. However, he argued for release after serving his time, stating that his son never indicated any issues to him and that he followed gun safety protocols.

The report also revealed that James Crumbley believed his gun was securely hidden and known only to him until the tragic incident occurred. The prosecutors are pushing for a significant prison sentence for both parents based on their perceived lack of remorse and accountability in the case.
