A Parasite That Belongs in the Spotlight
A parasitic illness normally responsible for fewer than 50 Michigan cases in an entire year has now sickened more than 3,309 people in that state alone, and the outbreak is spreading. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced this week that lettuce and salad greens have emerged as the most consistent exposure identified across more than 1,000 detailed patient interviews. At the same time, the FDA confirmed it is simultaneously managing five separate Cyclospora outbreak investigations nationally, adding a layer of investigative complexity that officials are still untangling.
