Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently welcomed fellow Midwestern Governor Tim Walz to Detroit during the Democratic ticket’s first joint rally in Michigan. The event was marked by praise for Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate selection.
During the rally, Whitmer commended Walz as a 'good Midwesterner' and highlighted their shared approach to leadership, emphasizing the importance of 'getting things done.' She humorously noted that Walz may surpass her in the use of colorful language, hinting at his potential future role in the White House.
Whitmer lauded Walz's successful tenure as governor, citing his ability to work across party lines to achieve consensus. She pointed out his accomplishments in passing infrastructure legislation, tax cuts, free school lunches, and enhancing public safety.
The Michigan Democrat playfully mentioned their friendly competition in striving for excellence in governance over the past few years. Despite ruling herself out of consideration for Harris' running mate, Whitmer expressed her commitment to serving out her term until 2026.
Whitmer, Walz, and other Midwestern Governors Tony Evers of Wisconsin and JB Pritzker of Illinois, collectively endorsed Harris following President Joe Biden's exit from the race. This unified support from the 'blue wall' of the upper Midwest underscored the Democratic Party's backing for Harris.
Emphasizing the need for strong female leadership in the White House, Whitmer stated that it was long overdue. She also praised Walz as a suitable candidate for the vice presidency alongside Harris.
