Michael Stewart hits back at critics of Scotland fans booing England anthem

Michael Stewart has taken aim at critics of the Scotland fans who last night booed England's national anthem.

As God Save the King was played over the tannoy at Hampden, the packed-out home crowd jeered.

The friendly match took place at the national stadium to celebrate 150 years of Scottish football with the oldest fixture in the international calendar.

The game finished 3-1 to Gareth Southgate's men, as Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane sealed the comfortable victory for the visitors.

One of the major talking points post-match has been the booing of the national anthems though, with England fans doing the same in return, although clearly not as audible.

Ally McCoist was unhappy with the behaviour of the Tartan Army. He branded it "disrespectful" and "out of order".

The former Scotland and Rangers star suggested the jeers may have come from 'SNP fans' within the home support, as he confirmed that he was singing along to England's anthem.

And Real Madrid star Bellingham, who scored an assisted on the night, admitted that it helped to spur him and his teammates on to victory.

But Stewart has appeared to launch a defence of the Scotland fans. The pundit has taken to social media to quote some of the anti-Scottish lyrics in the anthem.

The former Hearts and Hibs midfielder said: “'Rebellious Scots to crush'. Know your place and don’t be disrespectful."

Stewart later added in a separate post: "GSTK can not be the English and British national anthem. This is the crux of the issue.

"England is not Britain but on many fronts it either acts like it is or it’s facilitated that way. That's disrespectful and unacceptable, it’s also not sustainable."

McCoist said on talkSPORT this morning: "I think another country's national anthem should be respected and I think it was absolutely out of order.

"I do not like the booing of any national anthem to be honest with you. I just think it is a distinct lack of respect. I genuinely dislike it intensely. If you can't show respect, I am not talking about England, I am talking about anybody or anybody that goes to Hampden, any football ground or any sporting event.

"If you can't show the opposition respect by respecting their national anthem, I think it is a poor show.

"I get the rivalry with England and Scotland, and I get some of the Scots, perhaps SNP fans giving it the whole bit, but I am talking about in general. There should be respect shown for an opposing national anthem and I think it is totally out of order."
