Michael Owen spells out next Liverpool transfer 'hope' after Cody Gakpo deal

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen hopes that the Reds' hunt for midfield reinforcements is not compromised after an agreement was struck with PSV for Dutch attacker Cody Gakpo.

Following an admirable 3-1 Boxing Day away win against Aston Villa, Liverpool fans were treated with a belated Christmas present after reports emerged of Gakpo's imminent move to Anfield.

The 23-year-old enjoyed an impressive FIFA World Cup campaign for the Netherlands, scoring three goals in as many Group A matches for Louis van Gaal's side. Whilst his notable form for club and country has been clear for all to see, several European clubs had been linked with Gakpo, and therefore, news of an agreement arrived as a pleasant surprise to fans.

While such a breakthrough has been greeted with overwhelming positivity, significant proportions of supporters have previously highlighted Jurgen Klopp's need for midfield reinforcements. Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham is a name strongly linked to Merseyside.

And Owen namechecked the England international when offering his views on last night's chain of events. “Initial reaction [to the Gakpo deal] is that Liverpool have been desperate for a midfielder for some time now, it’s an ageing midfield, it’s a good midfield, but ageing,” said Owen.

“A midfielder has been key for some time. I just hope it doesn’t mean that Jude Bellingham isn’t going to be somebody on the wishlist come the summer."

Owen, who also represented Real Madrid and Manchester United during his playing days, was quick to laud the impending addition of Gakpo, too.

He added: “But first thing is first, Gakpo had a fantastic World Cup. 23-year-old, it brings the age of the team down, it looks like a very good signing.”

Liverpool return to Premier League action in just three days' time when they welcome former boss Brendan Rodgers and Leicester City to Anfield.
