Michael Owen's daughter promises she won't 'disrespect' him in Love Island villa

Michael Owen's daughter Gemma admits her dad is "not 100% happy" with her decision to take part in this year's Love Island.

The former England and LFC legend, 42, will watch from the side-lines as Gemma, 19, enjoys a summer of fun and romance. She said he has already warned her not to date footballers.

Gemma, a Team GB dressage competitor, has vowed to avoid “disrespecting or embarrassing” dad by having sex on camera. She said: “They trust me not to do anything to embarrass them, so I don’t think I would have sex in the villa.”

Continuing on the subject of her parents, Michael and Louise, she said: “I think what my family think is always going to be in the forefront of my mind because they are the most important thing to me, and the opinion I care about the most.” But dad Michael hasn’t actually forbidden her from doing anything, the Mirror reports.

Gemma said: “My dad didn’t actually give me that much advice. He said: ‘I’m not going to tell you do’s and dont's - you know how to behave. You just go and do it.’ My mum’s bit of advice was: ‘Gem, just remember to keep it classy.’”

And although dad has previously warned Gemma to “stay away from footballers", she reckons he would secretly be pleased if she brought a player home.

She added: “I’m sure if I did actually get with a footballer he’d be quite happy because he’d have something in common with them - I don’t think he’d be annoyed,” she says - which is lucky, as she “naturally likes someone who works out, looks after themselves, is successful at what they do, and has ambition”, like a lot of sportsmen.

Michael has never watched Love Island, so only has a vague idea of what to expect from the show, and Gemma believes he will cringe watching her compete in raunchy challenges. She’ll be sure not to “brag” about her famous dad, as she explains: “I want people to get to know me for me - not just being the daughter of an ex footballer.”

Also, as she points out, it probably wouldn’t impress many of the youngsters in the villa. She added: “My dad was probably at the end of his career when my ex-boyfriends were born".

Love Island starts Monday at 9pm on ITV2.
