Michael Owen breaks silence after Gemma comes second in Love Island final with Luca Bish

Michael Owen has finally weighed in on Gemma Owen finishing second on Love Island after the dramatic finale on Monday evening.

The footballer, who many had hoped would appear in the 'meet the parents' episode, had been pretty much silent about his daughter's involvement in the Virgin Media show up until last night.

But after watching her and partner Luca Bish miss out to the 'Italian stallion and Turkish delight' of Davide Sanclimenti and Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, Michael took to social media with a lovely message.

He tweeted a picture of him and Gemma at a plush family dinner alongside a short but sweet caption which read: "She's done us proud."

He shared the same snap on his Instagram but opened up more in the caption, telling his "special girl" to "hurry up home".

He previously spoke to Sky Sports At The Races over his reason for not being at the villa: "My wife will do that duty. I'll represent the horses and she'll represent the daughter."

He added: "I don't know what I'll get from Box To Box (one of his horses). But I know what I'm going to get from my daughter.

Host Laura Whitmore announced the winning couple during the live final, which saw the couples dress up for the annual Summer Ball and declare their love for one another.

Four couples reached the final of this year's series of the Virgin Media dating show after eight weeks of sun, love and drama in Mallorca.

Earlier on, it was revealed that Tasha and Andrew came fourth, while Dubliner Dami Hope and Indiyah placed third.

Some fans were gutted that Luca and Gemma didn't win, with one tweeting: "Acc really gutted for Luca and Gemma. If anybody deserved to win it was them"

However, many were overjoyed that Davide and Ekin won, with one writing: "EKIN-SU AND DAVIDE MY WINNERS"

A second said: "EKIN AND DAVIDE MOST ICONIC ISLANDERS TO EVER SET FOOT ON THE VILLA GROUNDS"

A third added: "Ekin and Davide are the rightful winners!!! I’m screaming"
