Michael Flatley's movie Blackbird generates almost €140,000 in the box office between UK and Ireland

LORD of The Dance star Michael Flatley’s movie Blackbird has generated almost €140,000 (£120,000) in the box office between the UK and Ireland since its release on September 2.

Flatley stars as Victor Blackley, a secret agent with the codename Blackbird. He’s the leader of an undercover special forces unit called the Chieftains and encounters a string of obstacles as the world of espionage unfolds.

The film screened at the Monaco Streaming Film Festival last year, where Flatley picked up the best actor award.

But figures released to us can reveal that the movie has earned just over €136,000 in the UK and Irish box office since its release last month.

The Irish American superstar hoofer previously told us how it was a passion project for him.

Speaking at the premiere of Blackbird last month, he said: “Everybody told me it was impossible. Everybody told me. They said ‘you can’t do a movie, you are a dancer’. That kind of thing. But you can’t let it stop you. And you’ve heard me say it, I encourage all young people, ‘get up and follow your dreams’ don’t listen to naysayers.

“I’ll try anything once, you only live nine times - you've got to go for it.

“My mother always wanted me to do this movie and, God rest her soul, she is not here to see it, but I know she is here to see it if you know what I mean.

He said the film is both an ode to his late mother and to his love of Ireland.

“I wanted the world to see Ireland and north Cork is spectacular. But all of Ireland is. Ireland is the most beautiful place in the world and the world should see it.

“That’s how I see it.

“I tried to get in as much, in fact, we filmed way more that didn’t make the final cut that I would have liked to have seen in it. But I got in a lot and I’m very happy.”

“I have to say half the crew is Irish. And no matter where we went, it is a serious movie, but we had a great old time and that made it so much more pleasurable. And it is great to have the Irish touch.”

But he admitted he doesn’t think he will have time for a sequel.

“You never know. Right now, I just don’t have time. I’d love to. I’d love to do that but we see`, we’ve got a bunch of calls in,” he added.
