Michael Fassbender’s Spy TV Thriller The Agency Has Already Been Renewed For Season 2

Michael Fassbender The Agency

The newest show for fans who love a good ol’ spy story is finally here! The first two episodes of The Agency have just debuted on Paramount+ and they’ve broken major streaming records.

It’s been such a success that the show has already been renewed for a season two, so you don’t have to worry about any cheeky cliffhangers that go unanswered. According to Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, The Agency drew in a massive 5.1 million global cross-platform viewers — becoming the most-streamed new series in Showtime history.

The show is based on a critically acclaimed French TV series called Le Bureaus des Legendes, so you know it’s a solid story. It’s an espionage thriller that weaves in a love story at its heart, starring Michael Fassbender, Jodie Turner-Smith and Richard Gere. Oh, and it’s executive produced by George Clooney

Fassbender was drawn to The Agency due to the complex nature of all the characters in the show, particularly his character Martian. I personally LOVE character-driven plots, so I’m keen to see what Fassbender brings to the table.

“I found the environment and the character fascinating… I always like characters where, in some way, there’s some conflict going on. That’s when we get good drama,” he told Men’s Health

“Those complex characters are always more interesting to dig into what’s motivating, what drives them, what sort of relationships they have. I like to be part of things where audiences either leave the cinema or in their homes at the end of an episode, and there are a lot of questions.”

When will The Agency be released in Australia?

The Agency’s first two episodes were released on Paramount+ on November 30, 2024, so you can check them out now! There are 10 episodes in total, and new episodes will be dropping weekly on Saturday until 25 January, 2025.

What’s the plot of The Agency and is it based on a previous TV show?

The Agency is in fact based on a hit French show called Le Bureau des Legends, a political thriller following agents in France’s principal external service.

Richard Gere told The Hollywood Reporter that he was actually a big fan of the original before he signed on to play Bosko.

“I had been a great admirer of the French version of this… and when they came to me to talk about this, I thought, ‘Oh okay’, because the series had been so good. My wife and I loved it. That’s one of our date shows,” he said.

“So I read it, but with some trepidation, too. How do you live up to that? The French show was terrific.”

It seems like the American scripts lived up to Gere’s expectations, because he quickly signed on to play the brash London station chief.

This new version is still an espionage political thriller, but centred around a covert CIA agent called Martian (Michael Fassbender) who has to abandon his undercover life. Ooooh. I wonder why?!

After he returns back to London, his former love from his secret life reappears, and sparks fly. Will he risk it all for love? Here’s what the official synopsis says: “His career, his real identity and his mission are pitted against his heart; hurling them both into a deadly game of international intrigue and espionage”.

Who is in the cast for The Agency?

The cast for this new show is stacked, with Michael Fassbender, Richard Gere and Jodie Turner-Smith leading the way. Other series regulars include Jeffrey Wright, John Magaro, Alex Reznik, Katherine Waterston, Andrew Brooke, India Fowler, Harriet Sansom Harris, Saura Lightfoot-West and Reza Brojerdi.

There are also some fab guest stars and recurring roles, with Dominic West, Hugh Bonneville, Ambreen Razia, Bilal Hasna, Adam Nagaitis, David Harewood, Kurt Egyiawan, Sabrina Wu, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor and Ray BLK popping up throughout the series run.
