Michael Douglas looks unrecognisable as he transforms into historical figure

Michael Douglas looked like he had taken a trip back in time on Wednesday, as he transformed into a historic figure for his latest project.

The Hollywood star, 78, looked identical to Founding Father Benjamin Franklin as he filmed his upcoming biopic series, Franklin.

Michael was unrecognisable as he sported long auburn hair, complete with grey roots. He wore a period costume as he filmed in Paris on the banks of the River Seine.

The costume was made up of an oversized coat, burgundy scarf and breeches. He also carried a period hat in his hands.

The Fatal Attraction actor was joined on set by rising star Noah Jupe, who plays his grandson and diplomat William Temple Franklin.

The series is being created by Apple TV+ and will tell the story of "one of the greatest gambles of Benjamin Franklin's career".

As well as staring in the show, Michael will work as an executive producer.

A press release from the streaming service explained that Franklin will focus on the time the inventor "convinced France — an absolute monarchy — to underwrite America's experiment in democracy".

The series will be made up of eight episodes, with an official release date yet to be announced.

Producer Tony Krantz has said Michael was the only actor they had considered for the role.

"When Richard Plepler, Tim Van Patten, and I started talking about possible actors to play Franklin, there was really only one: Michael Douglas.

"We got lucky. It was like winning the lottery — he said yes," Tony said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

He added: "I think people will see one of Michael Douglas' greatest performances ever in this project."

Michael has appeared in more than 50 Hollywood films including Wall Street, Romancing The Stone and Fatal Attraction, winning two Oscars and four Golden Globes along the way.

He is well-known for his work portraying iconic figures and previously voiced Benjamin Franklin in the 2003 PBS miniseries Freedom: A History of US.

He was also widely praised for his portrayal of Liberace in the romantic drama series Behind the Candelabra.
