Michael Beale insists he wants signings who can make a long term impact at Rangers as fans continue to wait for his first signing. But the Ibrox boss says it WON’T be Tom Davies after the Ibrox boss confirmed there is no interest in the Everton midfielder.
Swansea City winger Morgan Whittaker is the latest target to emerge, with Record Sport revealing the 22-year-old is keen on a switch to Ibrox. Rangers have had a bid rejected for the former Derby County man and Beale confirmed interest and added doesn’t want players who will only do a job in the short term.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Kilmarnock, he said: “Whittaker is a player we know and like but there's no update on that. I think he's a good player. We are looking at all areas, we want to bring more goals into the club. I’m really pleased with how things are moving. We are going in the right direction. I don’t want any short term gaps. We want players who can make a big impact moving forwards into 2023 and 2024 onwards. It’s important any decisions we make are the right ones.
“I know the recruitment strategy at this club, and it is something I believe in. As a coach, I like to recruit people for specific roles and give them real clarity on the role they will play and areas they can improve."
On Davies, he said: “There’s been no interest from us in Tom Davies. I spoke about him when asked but he won’t be a Rangers player.”
Meanwhile, Kemar Roofe has not suffered a broken arm but Rangers boss Beale insists he will need a scan to determine how long the luckless striker will be sidelined for while Tom Lawrence has also suffered a setback.
Former Anderlecht and Leeds United frontman Beale was forced off shortly after scoring what proved to be the extra time winner against Aberdeen in the Viaplay Cup final on Sunday. It was a huge blow for the 30-year-old who was only making his return from a spell out.
Beale said: “Kemar Roofe won’t be available for the weekend. He will get a scan and a second opinion. It’s not a break, but we need to wait and see the extent of the injury. It’s a huge disappointment for Kemar and the fans. He is a huge character at this club and I feel for him.
“James Sands will come back into the squad and Antonio Colak hopefully returning for the weekend. We don’t want to push his return on the artificial pitch. Tom Lawrence had a slight setback. It’s a slow process and we will assess as we go on how he feels. It’s a disappointment for Tom, but is the reality of this type of injury.”
Beale said of the Ayrshire test: “Kilmarnock’s home for of late is very good. We have no excuses and we need to go there and play We have had a lack of consistency in the squad this season. Connor Goldson and Ben Davies getting a run together is great and can see us improving. Borna Barisic has been essential to giving us balance across the pitch. We switched off as a team in a moment at the weekend, we worked hard afterwards and won the game.”
