Miami's Building Boom Is Losing Steam — And Latino Workers Feel It First

  Miami-Dade's once-blistering construction hiring pace has cooled, Miami Today reported in late August, and the broader Miami metro area's construction employment slipped roughly 1% over the year to June.

• Florida shed 3,200 construction jobs statewide over the same 12 months while adding 8,700 in leisure and hospitality, according to the Florida Department of Commerce — a slower hospitality gain than a year earlier.
• Nationally, leisure and hospitality jobs rebounded sharply in August, the sector's best month in nearly a year, even as Miami's luxury hotels report a separate shortage of qualified managers and chefs.

The construction cranes that once symbolized Miami-Dade's unstoppable hiring boom are still turning, but the pace behind them has slowed. A year after contractors here were adding workers faster than almost anywhere else in Florida or the nation, the county's construction hiring engine has cooled, Miami Today reported on Aug. 26.
