Mets slugger Pete Alonso exited Wednesday night’s game against the Braves after getting hit near his left wrist during his first-inning at-bat by starting pitcher Charlie Morton.
Alonso received attention from the New York training staff before leaving the field. He was replaced in the lineup by Tommy Pham. Alonso returned to the Mets dugout later in the game. He appeared to be wearing a bandage on the area where he was struck by Morton’s pitch.
Fortunately for the Mets, X-rays did not reveal a fracture, and Alonso is listed as day to day after being diagnosed with a wrist contusion, per MLB.com.
The incident came one day after Alonso got into a bit of a shouting match with the Braves after he hit a home run to give New York a 4-1 lead in Tuesday night’s game. After returning to the dugout, he shouted toward Atlanta pitcher Bryce Elder, “Throw it again, please!” The Braves went on to win, 6-4.
Alonso is slashing .231/.326/.546 on the season, with 22 home runs and 49 RBI in 62 games. He leads the major leagues in homers and the National League in RBIs.
