Approximately 55,000 Meteor customers are in line for a refund after an investigation by communications regulator ComReg into the phone network's data charge obligations.
ComReg have completed a full investigation into the responsibilities of Meteor to properly supply customers with details of out-of-bundle data charges between 2016 and 2017.
The regulator has determined that Meteor did not fulfil its obligations outlined under the Universal Service Regulations over the two years in question and, as a result, the company has been required to refund thousands of customers.

Following the findings of the investigation, Meteor has agreed to refund approximately 55,000 customers a total of €722,760 for charges during the period outlined. This equates to approximately €13.02 per customer.
Current customers who are owed a refund will be made aware that a credit will be applied to their account while former customers will be refunded via a Payzone voucher, applied using the contact details on record. All refunds will be issued by July of this year and affected customers will have 90 days to claim one.
In 2017, Meteor's parent company eir confirmed that it would be retiring the name 'Meteor' as a standalone brand.
A statement on the eir website regarding the outcome reads: "Meteor has taken certain remedial steps following this investigation and has entered into a settlement agreement with ComReg.
"As part of this settlement agreement, Meteor has agreed to refund certain out-of-bundle data charges that were incurred by approximately 55,000 Meteor customers during 2016 and 2017 to a total sum of €722,760. The average value of a refund is €13.02 per customer.
"We will be contacting these customers by 14 April 2023 to inform them of their entitlement to a refund. Active customers will be given a credit to their account. In general, non-active customers will be provided with a unique barcode which they can use to claim their refund through Payzone in retail outlets."
