Met Police reveal number of arrests during Carabao Cup final - and confirm no Trafalgar Square arrests

Police arrested nine people in London on Sunday for offences relating to the Carabao Cup final.

Thousands of Newcastle United fans travelled to the capital to support the club as they competed in their first cup final since 1999. Supporters celebrated their return to Wembley by partying in Trafalgar Square on Saturday evening.

Although Newcastle lost the game 2-0 to Manchester United, fans remained positive. They continued to wave black and white flags and sing their hearts out as they left the stadium.

The Metropolitan Police has now confirmed that a total of nine people were arrested in London for offences relating to the cup final. However they are unable to say whether they were Newcastle United or Manchester United fans.

The force confirmed that no arrests were made on Saturday evening in relation to the Carabao Cup final.

However they said the following arrests took place on Sunday:

  • 16-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly
  • 18-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs

  • 19-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs

  • 34-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs

  • 24-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of Sec 4a / Affray / common assault

  • 31-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly

  • 61-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of fraud.

Other related arrests:

  • A male was arrested for outraging public decency but later issued a Penalty Notice for Disorder for sec 5 Public order
  • A male was arrested for being drunk and disorderly

Three other males will receive postal charges in the next three days, one for possession of class A drugs, one for possession of a pyrotechnic and one for entering the playing area.

Chief Superintendent Ian Howells, of the Metropolitan Police Service, said: "Over the course of the weekend the Met, working with our partners, successfully policed a number of football matches and other events across London, including the Carabao Cup final.

"A large number of football fans were out across the capital which required a significant policing operation to make sure everyone was able to safely enjoy the matches and to combat crime and anti-social behaviour.

"The vast majority of supporters were well behaved and I’d like to thank them and all our partners including the supporter groups for their support."

Toon fans who couldn't make the trip to London, gathered in fan zones and pubs in Newcastle city centre. They waved flags, sang their hearts out and continued to support the team after the final whistle.

Chronicle Live previously reported how six people were arrested in Newcastle city centre following the Carabao Cup final.

Police vehicles were parked up on the Bigg Market and outside of St James' Park. Officers were also patrolling the streets on horses.

Northumbria Police said the majority of people behaved responsibly and six arrests were made on the day for low level offences.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We are pleased that the overwhelming majority of people watching the Carabao Cup final in Newcastle city centre yesterday behaved responsibly.

"Officers made a total of six arrests on the day. These were for low-level offences including drunk and disorderly, anti-social behaviour and non-serious injury assault."
