Met Police PC wore ‘sinister’ disguise for violent attack on father-in-law

A Metropolitan Police officer has been sacked after donning a disguise to ambush and violently attack his own father-in-law.

Mohammed Rahman, who worked on the Met’s safer schools team, covered part of his face with a snood and hat for the attack outside his father-in-law’s Indian takeaway in February last year.

A tribunal heard the former PC kicked and punched the victim as he closed his business for the day, as well as throwing him against shutters.

Rahman was identified when the victim called out for help and other local business owners in Bromley-by-Bow in east London rushed to his aid, seizing the police officer.

A misconduct panel heard Rahman had earlier sent threatening messages about his mother-in-law to his wife, in the midst of a relationship breakdown.

In one, sent at 5.44am, Rahman wrote: “Your slaggy mum is gonna die remember that.”

Seconds later, he wrote: “That lil bitch is gonna suffer n die.”

The misconduct hearing was told Rahman, who has two brothers also in the Metropolitan Police, joined the force in July 2020 after a series of failed attempts to sign up.

He married his wife in July 2019, but the relationship was hampered by “family tensions” and in September 2021 she had moved back in with her family.

Rahman accused his mother-in-law of “creating problems between them”, the hearing was told, and he sent a series of menacing messages in December 2021.

A misconduct panel found Rahman had then attacked his father-in-law in February 2022, at around 10pm at the back of his business premises.

“PC Rahman attacked (him) including kicking him on his left side, punching him, and throwing him against the shutters of his garage”, said the panel, in its ruling. “(The victim) subsequently called out in panic for help and that fellow shopkeepers came to his assistance and beat the masked attacker.

“During the scuffle, Mr Rahman’s face covering came off at which juncture (victim) exclaimed to those present that the attacker was in fact his son-in-law and he knew him.”

The misconduct hearing was told criminal proceedings against Rahman were dropped when key witnesses, including his father-in-law, withdrew their cooperation from the prosecution.

“Mr Rahman’s actions were premeditated and preplanned”, found the misconduct panel. “(He) set out looking for trouble. He attended (his father-in-law’s) premises in disguise which is considered to have sinister intent.”

At the conclusion of the disciplinary process, Rahman was barred from working again as a police officer. He had earlier resigned his post at the Met.

“The panel considered that the public would be appalled by Mr Rahman’s conduct”, said the misconduct report.
