Met Police officer 'struck up relationship with vulnerable woman'

A serving Met Police sergeant will appear in court on Thursday accused of having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a vulnerable woman he met during an investigation.

Police Sergeant Jonathan Peters, 36, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday accused of misconduct in public office over the alleged relationship.

Prosecutors claim he had inappropriate relations between March and December 2021 with a vulnerable woman who he met while on duty and then travelled with her in a police vehicle several times without a policing purpose.

The charge was brought after an investigation by the watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which said it began investigating in January 2022 after a mandatory referral from the Met.

Investigators then passed a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service six months later, which decided to charge PS Peters with the offence.

According to the Crown Prosecution Service website, the offence carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The charge is brought in cases where there is alleged “serious wilful abuse or neglect of the power or responsibilities of the public office held.”

Peters’s next hearing will be at Southwark Crown Court on November 21.
