Met Police brace as UKIP protest and pro-Palestine demo to descend on central London

Police are braced as protesters are to descend on central London, as concerns were raised over the proximity between pro-Palestine and UK Independence Party (UKIP) rallies.

Two counter protests to the right-wing UKIP demo are planned in London tomorrow.

The Met Police is planning to implement special measures to keep each group separated from each other to ensure there are no violent clashes.

Conditions mean each set of protesters are obliged to remain in areas defined by police, with pro-Palestinian demonstrators contained between Downing Street and Whitehall Place and Ukip supporters within the north terrace of Trafalgar Square.

Pro-Palestine groups which are part of the Palestine Coalition will march from Russell Square past Trafalgar Square and end at Whitehall tomorrow afternoon.

The Met Police said the demonstrators must not deviate from this agreed route and the march can’t start before 12.45pm tomorrow.

Speeches must end by 5pm and the demo should be over by 6pm, in order to “prevent serious disruption and disorder” police force said.

The UKIP protest will happen at the same time. And fears of the two groups violently clashing have been swirling.

UKIP are taking to the streets of central London after their planned protest in Whitechapel, east London, on Saturday was blocked by the police.

The Met Police banned the group from assembling there over fears there could be “clashes” with locals. The demonstrates are forbidden to step foot in the whole Tower Hamlets borough.

They will now start in Marble Arch before marching to Trafalgar Square. They have also been told they are not allowed to set off before 12.45pm.

Speeches must end at 3pm and people involved should disperse by 3.30pm.

In a statement, the Met Police said: “Anyone taking part must stick to the agreed route shown on the map below which goes along Oxford Street, turning right at Tottenham Court Road, down Charing Cross Road and turning into the North Terrace of Trafalgar Square.”

Ukip supporters need to follow the area shown in red during the rally (Met Police)

UKIP has called its demonstration a “March With Jesus” protest, and said “Christian items” are more important to bring than flags.

However, Palestine marchers were “deeply concerned” that the Met Police were letting the right-wing protest go ahead at the same time.

In a statement, the coalition said: “The Palestine Coalition is deeply concerned by the decision by the Met Police to permit a Ukip march to end in Trafalgar Square tomorrow, not far from where our national march for Palestine will be passing.

“Whilst we know that the Ukip march is likely to be very small in numbers, it will almost certainly be actively hostile towards our marchers, creating a more difficult situation for us to manage, as well as for the police themselves.”

Meanwhile, anyone taking part in the counter protest to the UKIP protestors, organised by Central London Anti-Fascists, must remain in the red shaded area in Whitechapel.

Stop the Hate must stay within this agreed area in Aldwych (Met Police)

There is another counter protest organised by Stop the Hate.

Demonstrators have been told by the Met Police to remain in an agreed area in Aldwych. Everyone will need to have left by 5pm.
