Met Office yellow weather warning for floods in force until midnight in Scotland

Scots are facing flooding tonight as torrential rain is forecast to batter parts of the country until midnight.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for rain from 3pm on Monday until midnight, relating to parts of the south of Scotland.

The regions and local authorities affected are Dumfries and Galloway, Scottish Borders, East Ayrshire, South Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire, with forecasters predicting as much as 50mm of rain could fall in some places.

SEPA predicts that the adverse conditions may impact the country's transport network. Ferry operator CalMac has suspended a number of services due to tidal conditions, with others delayed or featuring a 'be aware' warning.

A spokesperson from the Met Office said: "Heavy rain through this afternoon and evening, falling on to already saturated ground, is expected to cause some localised flooding.

"Accumulations widely 15-25mm expected across the warning area with 50mm possible for a few sites over higher ground."

What to expect

  • Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer
  • Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer
  • Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely

If you plan on driving during these conditions, the Met Office warns that you should take extra care to avoid accidents. Roads will be much more slippery than normal, and the spray from other vehicles could suddenly reduce your visibility, so it's best to take it slow and avoid flooded roads if you can.
