Temperature to plummet to -1C in Glasgow tonight as yellow weather warning issued

The Met Office has this morning (December 8) extended a weather warning across parts of Scotland for snow and ice.

Forecasters have said that disruption on the pavements and roads is likely due to icy surfaces and potential snowfall in some areas. The west is to be on the lookout for ice on the road, as delays on public transport is also possible.

Temperatures will plummet to -1 degrees by 5pm in Glasgow tonight, with forecasts expecting temperature to dip as low as -4 degrees in the coming days.

So, what does the weather warning mean? Find out more below.

When is the yellow weather warning to begin and end?

The yellow weather warning was put into place at 5pm on December 7, and is set to end at 12pm today (December 8).

Another, separate weather warning for ice will be implemented from 4pm on December 8, and will end at 12pm on Friday, December 9.

Which areas will be impacted by snow and ice?

The yellow weather warning for snow is set to stay in the north-easterly parts of Scotland. The following local authorities of Strathclyde will be affected:

  • East Ayrshire
  • South Ayrshire
  • South Lanarkshire

What does the yellow weather warning mean for road users and pedestrians?

The yellow weather warning will impact the way people take to the roads today and tomorrow, as the potential for accidents will rise drastically due to icy surfaces.

The forecasters explained: "Frequent wintry showers are likely to fall on frozen surfaces in places, leading to the formation of icy patches.

"These showers are likely to fall as snow on high ground, with the potential for several centimetres to accumulate over parts of southern Scotland, Northeast England, N Wales, the North York Moors and Northern Ireland."

The Met Office also listed the potential areas of disruption that people may face due to the change in weather. These include:

  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
  • Some roads and railways may be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
