Met Office weather warning to Leeds as 15 hours of heavy snow set to hit city during Storm Eunice

Leeds has been issued a 15 hour snow warning from the UK's Met Office in the latest Storm Eunice development

Heavy snow and strong winds could cause chaos across the city on Friday (February 18).

This latest yellow weather warning stretches from 3am on Friday until 6pm later that same day.

At present there are separate yellow and amber weather warnings in place for severe winds, which pose a 'danger to life'.

Public transport has been disrupted and motorists have been advised to stay at home while 80mph winds sweep across parts of the UK.

The Met Office has said the mix of wind and snow will make matters worse, further disrupting travel, cause power cuts to rural communities and wider power cuts to services, like mobile phone signal.

The Met Office has said: "Snow, heavy in places, is likely to develop on the northern side of Storm Eunice as it moves across the UK on Friday.

"There is still uncertainty in the track of Storm Eunice and not all areas within the warning area are expected to see snow.

"However, some places may see around 5 cm of snow at low levels away from coasts. Accumulations are expected to be significantly higher over hills though with 10-20 cm perhaps up to 30 cm possible above around 250 metres.

"Strong winds occurring at the same time may lead to very poor visibility, blizzard conditions and drifting of lying snow."

What the Met Office says to expect

  • There is a chance of travel delays on roads, possibly with stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel
  • There is a slight chance that some rural communities could be temporarily cut off
  • There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected
