Met Office weather warning as freezing fog forecast to hit north west this weekend

A yellow weather warning has been issued for parts of the UK, including north west England.

The Met Office has warned that 'freezing fog' could cause travel delays tonight (Friday, January 20) and tomorrow morning (Saturday, January 21). Freezing fog is made of water droplets that freeze on contact with objects such as the pavement, road or car.

It can quickly form a layer of ice. Slower journey times with delays to bus and train services are possible and there is a chance of flight cancellations or delays, the forecaster said.

The alert is in place from 2am until 11am on Saturday. The Met Office said: "Freezing fog is expected to develop during Friday night and will be slow to clear in places through Saturday morning. Some fog could be quite dense with the visibility falling below 100 metres at times.

"Additionally, freezing fog may lead to some untreated surfaces becoming slippery. Western England is more likely to see freezing fog persist into late morning and in a few places into the afternoon."

The warning covers much of England and Wales. Greater Manchester does not fall into the warning area, but in the north west the alert extends to Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester. The East and West Midlands, Yorkshire & Humber, London and South East England, South West England and Wales will also be impacted.

The Met Office advises to avoid travelling in the fog if possible. If drivers do decide to travel, it is recommended that they drive very slowly with dipped headlights as full-beam lights reflect off the fog causing a 'white wall' effect.

The forecaster also advises keeping an eye on the speed you drive at, as fog can give the illusion of moving in slow motion.
