Met Office weather: 'Dangerous' heatwave affecting Spain and Portugal to spread to UK this weekend

The Met Office has warned that a "dangerous" heatwave is making its way toward the UK this weekend. A spell of exceptionally hot weather is likely to extend further into next week in Bristol and other parts of the country.

Parts of Europe including Spain and Portugal are already being affected by the heatwave, which the weather forecaster described as "dangerous". It added that the extremely hot air will make its way north towards the UK this weekend and will bring soaring temperatures with it.

On Twitter, the weather forecaster shared an update: "A spell of very hot weather is increasingly likely for many of us early next week. A dangerous #heatwave is affecting Spain and Portugal and this extremely hot air will move northwards towards the UK over the weekend."

The Met Office issued an amber weather warning on Sunday (July 17) stating there is a potential danger to life due to the soaring temperatures. It has now extended this warning to Monday and Tuesday with parts of Bristol reaching highs of 34°C on Tuesday, July 19.

In a weather report, the forecaster said there would be exceptionally high temperatures in many places in England early next week. It explained how the dangerous heatwave conditions will make their way northwards from Spain at the weekend, where temperatures have reached as high as 44°C in Seville.

In Bristol, a hot spell is likely to develop from Sunday, likely peaking early next week, leading to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure. The Met Office has warned of delays on roads and road closures being possible, along with delays and cancellations to rail and air travel, with potential for significant welfare issues for those who experience even moderate delays.
