Met Office warns snow on the way as UK braced for sub-zero conditions

The Met Office has warned snow is on the way as the region prepares for freezing conditions.

Liverpool enjoyed mild weather over the weekend as temperatures hovered around 8C on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

The forecasting agency expect conditions to remain "generally settled" this week as temperatures return to the January average in the North West.

The forecast for today reads: "A cold and frosty start for some on Monday, with any fog slowly clearing. Long sunny spells for most with a little more in the way of cloud near up slopes and across the Pennines."

However, temperatures are set to plunge below zero across the region this evening before a cold start to Tuesday morning.

The forecast continued: "Dry overnight with any clear spells quickly filling in with a mixture of low cloud, mist and fog. Winds mostly light with temperatures around average for the time of year. Minimum temperature -1 °C.

"A cold and foggy start Tuesday but fog slowly lifting as sunny spells develop fairly widely during the early afternoon. Temperatures close to the average for mid-January. Maximum temperature 6 °C."

The Met Office expect showery conditions to arrive on Wednesday, before a dry end to the week with some risk of overnight frost.

The weather experts predict a relatively dry end to January, but warned wintry conditions could return to the UK next month as the agency predicts a "risk of occasional snow " and "outbreaks of rain".

The long-range forecast from January 31 - February 14 said: "There is the ongoing likelihood of overnight frost and fog, which may linger in places. Into February outbreaks of rain and stronger winds are likely at times across the north, whereas settled conditions are likely to persist in the south.

"Temperatures are expected to be slightly above average, particularly in the north, however some colder interludes remain possible, bringing a risk of occasional snow, this most likely over northern hills."
