Met Office warns of disruption as new yellow warning for rain issued

A NEW yellow weather warning for rain covering much of the south of Scotland as well as Edinburgh has been issued.

The Met Office said “heavy rain will fall in places overnight into the early hours of Thursday” which could lead to some travel disruption and flooding.

It will come into force from 9pm tonight (May 29) and last until 4am on Thursday morning.

A yellow warning for thunderstorms is also in place for large parts of Scotland, with the met office again saying disruption is possible and it will remain in place until 10pm on Wednesday night having initially only meant to last until 7pm.

In terms of what to expect from the new rain warning, the Met Office said:

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency meanwhile also has a number of flood alerts in place.

These are in the following areas:

  • Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City
  • Ayrshire and Arran
  • Caithness and Sutherland
