Dangerous driving conditions will reach a peak this weekend as the North East prepares for bouts of freezing fog amid sub-zero temperatures.
On Thursday night we can expect lows of around -2C and wintry showers early on, clearing in the small hours with clear skies allowing frost to form before sunny spells break on Friday morning with highs of 4C throughout the day.
"Any wintry showers will clear through the evening to leave a cold and breezy night, with largely clear skies allowing areas of frost to form," the Met Office said via its website.

But things will take a turn for the worse over the weekend as freezing fog makes for horrific conditions on Saturday morning - with pedestrians and drivers alike reminded to take extra care on untreated surfaces.
And though temperatures will climb a few degrees across Sunday, Monday is set to remain gloomy and windy with light rains and showers throughout the day.
There will be "some freezing fog patches on Saturday morning, otherwise dry with sunny spells, but cold". Before "gradually becoming milder on Sunday and Monday, as well as breezier and cloudier, with some patchy light rain".
