Met Office warning as thunderstorms to batter the North West

The Met Office has issued a "danger to life" thunderstorm warning for the north west of England.

Weather conditions are set to make a drastic turn as a yellow alert comes into force across Chester, parts of Cheshire and Wales. Merseyside currently looks set to just miss the warnings, but those travelling to and from other parts of the north west may be impacted.

The warning is in place from midday today (Thursday) until 10pm. Forecasters expect the torrential downpours may cause travel disruption and, in a few places, flooding.

The Met Office added: "Driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.

"[People may experience] delays to train services, some short term loss of power and other services, [and] some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes."

Meanwhile, the forecast for Liverpool today is said to be "changeable". Forecasters predict a mix of sunshine and heavy showers, with some risk of thunderstorms and even hail.

People in Merseyside can expect highs of 19C, with lows of 15C. If you are travelling to or from the areas within the warning, you should take care and plan ahead.
