Met Office verdict on 'Polar vortex' snow blast as temperatures set to plummet

The Met Office has forecast a huge weather shift in Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands - as temperatures plunge by ten degrees within a matter of days. Meteorologists have predicted the mercury, which will top 11C on Friday, will be down in the single digits by Sunday - and eventually as low as 1C by Tuesday.

In its prediction for the city and surrounding region, the forecasters warn the weather will become "wetter and windier." The Met Office has even predicted "some snow showers next week, as easterly winds develop".

Today (Wednesday, February 1) will be another windy day, with some cloud and bright spells in Nottinghamshire. Drizzles have been forecast as we head into the afternoon as temperatures could drop to 5C.

The maximum temperature will be 12C on Thursday, as forecasters promise another cloudy and breezy day, though many areas will remain dry and it will feel milder than Wednesday. The outlook for Friday to Sunday reads: "Little change Friday and Saturday. The best of any sunshine in the east, with western parts likely cloudier.

"Less breezy Sunday, with all parts dry with brighter spells."

But next week promises a big shift. It comes amid reports of a polar vortex donut which could bring 3,000-mile-wide Arctic winds to the UK, Birmingham Live reports. Jim Dale, a meteorologist from British Weather Services, said the nation could be waiting until March for it to strike.

Speaking to Express.co.uk he said: " It’s a lottery in terms of where the export of freezing air actually goes. Freezing air out of the Arctic, e.g. the Troll from Trondheim could strike but time is beginning to run against it. There’s still five to six weeks where it still could happen."

The Met Office's long-range weather forecast from February 3 to February 12 says northern parts of the UK will continue to experience unsettled weather conditions. Met Office forecaster Alex Deakin said: "The donut [sic] of strong winds at the Pole is the polar vortex. And there's a weakening of the Polar Vortex."
