Met Office verdict on 'heatwave' rumoured to hit UK next week

The Met Office has given its forecast for Liverpool next week amid reports of a mini heatwave and a "week of glorious sunshine".

A number of news outlets are predicting up to seven days of nice weather, with the mercury rising up to 20C. But the weather experts' outlook for Liverpool and the rest of Merseyside does not quite match up with this.

Met Office forecasters predicts highs of 16C in the city next week, with the warmest days being Monday (April 17) and Thursday (April 20).

It is expected to stay "settled with plenty of bright or sunny spells" until Sunday, before "perhaps turning cloudier at times with some patchy drizzle on Sunday". A long range UK forecast from Wednesday (April 19) adds: "Most places staying dry with sunny spells, the best of these towards the north and west.

"Light or moderate winds, so feeling warm for most but cooler near North Sea coasts. Thereafter, much of the UK is likely to be under the influence of high pressure, producing fine and dry conditions.

"Increasing likelihood of showers, especially in the southwest, otherwise some good cloud breaks likely, especially to the lee of high ground. Temperatures mostly in the rather warm to warm category, particularly across the west and northwest.

"Eastern coastal areas are likely to remain rather cool under the influence of a moderate to strong easterly breeze, and some sheltered parts may be locally chilly overnight."
