Met Office snow forecast for Wales: The hour by hour forecast for Wednesday

People across Wales woke up to snow this morning. Schools have been closed as a result of the snow fall and warnings have been issued over treacherous driving conditions.

A Met Office yellow warning for snow and ice is in place across south Wales and many parts of southern England from midnight on Wednesday until 9am on Thursday. A second weather warning for snow is in place for north Wales from midnight on Wednesday to 9am on Thursday. A yellow weather warning has also been issued for north Wales from 3am on Thursday until 6pm on Friday.

Wednesday's weather warning for south Wales says: "Spells of snow on Wednesday may cause travel disruption during Wednesday into Thursday morning. Warning has also been extended into Thursday, primarily to include residual ice impacts that may persist into the morning travel period."

These maps show snow in white or grey, rain in blue or dark blue and hail in orange.

The snow looks set to keep falling quite lightly across the southern two-thirds of Wales this morning With a band of rain across the sea, some coastal areas may see rain falling rather than snow It looks as if hail, in orange here, may fall on coastal areas in south-east Wales Snow looks set to persist well into the morning with heavier snow falling on higher ground in the Valleys and Brecon Beacons By 11am, it looks as if the snow will definitely have turned into rainfall in areas like Gower, Swansea, Bridgend and possibly Newport. Although heavier snow looks set to continue falling in the Valleys and further north in Wales By noon, the snow looks set to be reaching north Wales while Swansea sees quite heavy hail or rain At 1pm, the forecast map shows the snow falling quite heavily over much of Pembrokeshire At the moment, the Met Office appears to expect temperatures to fall by the early afternoon with snow returning to coastal areas like Cardiff and Swansea Snow will also well and truly have reached north Wales by 3pm as it appears to cover almost the entire nation except Anglesey It is a similar picture at 4pm except there may be some rain in coastal areas in the south and some hail or snow on Anglesey Again, rain will have taken over across the southern coastal belt of Wales from Newport to Swansea and Pembrokshire With rain dominating in much of the south, particularly heavy snow looks set to fall over north Pembrokeshire and the Preseli mountains A mixture of rain and hail will have taken over in much of south Wales The snow does appear set to start to retreat from around 8pm By 10pm, much of the snow will have moved away from Wales And at midnight there is very little left At the moment, the forecast for Thursday morning snows rain in the south and snow in the north
