Met Office shares first forecast for Christmas Day and whether Brits will see snow

The Met Office has looked into the possibility of whether it will be a white Christmas in its first forecast for December 25.

Forecasters gave their first insight into the weather for the festive period on Saturday - and it revealed just what we can expect for Christmas Day and if snow is on its way.

It comes as heavy rain and strong winds battered parts of the UK on the last weekend of November.

The Met Office, which had denied a Beast from the East is coming this week, issued yellow warnings for rain in parts of Wales, parts of Scotland and areas in southern England until 3am this morning.

Its long-range forecast into late December says the UK is likely to get more settled weather with average temperatures for the time of year.

There is a chance of rain and the possibility that temperatures, the average in the UK last December was 5.3C, will plummet.

For those hoping a white Christmas, at this stage there is no mention of snow in the long-range forecast - only overnight frost and fog.

It says: "Confidence remains low for this period. Conditions are expected to be more settled than of late, with the potential for high pressure to be located close to the UK, at least at first.

"With time, however, we may see a return to frontal systems moving in from the west, with drier interludes between.

"Whilst temperatures may average out close to normal overall, colder conditions are possible at times, with a risk of overnight frost and fog."

Meanwhile further rain is expected across southeast England on Sunday with blustery showers in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Into next week sunshine and showers are expected on Monday before the country's weather turns drier and colder into Tuesday and Wednesday.

So far this month it has been wet up and down the country with Shoreham in southern England and Inverbervie in Scotland having provisionally their wettest Novembers on record with 176.4mm and 133mm, respectively.

The warmer weather has led to talk of a second spring for plants and flowers which are continuing their bloom for months longer than usual with it being 2.2C warmer than average so far this November.

It also comes on the back of a drought this summer and very warm temperatures for September and October.

UK 5 day weather forecast

Further rain at times across southeast England, otherwise bright or sunny spells. Blustery showers across Northern Ireland and much of Scotland, and spreading to some other western areas later. Still quite windy, especially in the northwest.

Tonight:

Cloud and rain clearing from southeast. Fog patches developing across some eastern areas, while showers continue across western parts. Patchy frost where skies clearer - most likely north and northeast.

Monday:

Fog and low cloud slowly clearing in east. Some showers in west and far south, else dry with a few bright or sunny spells, these mainly Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Much drier for most but with mist and fog which could be slow to clear in places. Winds mostly light and temperature on the cool side for many.
