Met Office says snow could hit various parts of the UK from tomorrow

Snow could hit the UK tomorrow, according to the Met Office. It comes as temperatures dipped nationwide, with some areas of the country going into freezing figures.

Forecasters say snow could fall from tomorrow (February 28). From Tuesday onwards, the Met Office say we could see “showers, possibly wintry, are expected for the north and east at times, especially for coastal areas.”

Birmingham Live reports forecasters have also predicted wintry showers between March 3 and March 12. Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell said: "A band of showers over England could turn a bit wintry at times, especially over higher ground. However, this is certainly not expected too much at lower levels and certainly not settling on the surface."

Met Office weather forecaster Tom Morgan added: “It does look like the month will begin on the cold side. There is quite a chilly week to come. From next weekend onwards there are some small indications we will see winds switch to a northerly direction and that will bring much colder conditions southwards.

"It is going to be Scotland and the north eastern parts of the UK that are likely to see any snow. But at this stage it is quite finely balanced. We could start to see a bit more of milder Atlantic flow develop from the middle part of the month onwards. It is too early to say but it does look like at the moment that March has a slightly higher chance of being a colder month than a milder month.”

In its medium-range forecast, the Met Office warns: "Showers mainly along northern and eastern coasts could be wintry across hills. Later in the period, high pressure is expected to migrate northwestwards, increasing the likelihood of any wintry showers in the north and east.

"There is a small possibility of more organised rain or snow spreading southwards, with the west and northwest most likely to remain under a settled regime. Winds generally light to moderate, possibly becoming stronger in the north. Temperatures generally colder than average, with some overnight frost likely."

The Met Office weather forecast for the East Midlands:

Tuesday:

Another largely cloudy day. Most parts staying dry, however further occasional light showers remain possible. Temperatures around average or perhaps slightly below, and still feeling chilly in the breeze. Maximum temperature 8 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Little change is expected with largely cloudy skies and occasional showers. Best chance of sunny intervals on Thursday. Winds also easing with daytime temperatures just below average.
