Met Office issues weather warning for thunder and 'sudden flooding' across region

A weather warning for thunder covering the Bristol region has been issued by the Met Office. The yellow warning is in force from 4am tomorrow (Sunday, October 23) until 5am on Monday (October 24).

The Met Office warning was issued just after 10am this morning and covers large parts of England including the Bristol area. It warns that the heavy rain and thunderstorms could lead to flooding and disruption tomorrow.

In terms of what to expect, it states:

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

Today

A dry start with sunny spells. Turning cloudier from the southwest with the chance of showers, these mainly across Cornwall and Devon. Showers may be heavy at times later in the afternoon, especially in the west. Breezy. Maximum temperature 18 °C.

Tonight

A cloudy evening with showers, these heavy at times, especially in the west. Dry for a time overnight with clear spells before heavy rain spreads to all parts. Mild. Minimum temperature 9 °C.

Sunday

Early heavy rain clears northwards through the morning to leave a dry day with sunny spells, for most. Turning cloudier later in the south with a risk of further showers. Maximum temperature 18 °C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday

Monday, a mixture of sunny spells and showers. Tuesday, dry with sunny spells for many with fewer showers. Windier on Wednesday with scattered showers, especially in west. Mild throughout.
