Met Office issues update on yellow warning for ice and snow across Scotland

THE Met Office has issued an update to its yellow weather warning for icy and snowy conditions for this weekend across Scotland.

In a recent post on social media the Met Office said it will continue to update its forecast for this weekend as it has removed its yellow warning for some parts of the country.

A warning for ice came into effect at 4pm on Friday, January 3, and is set to be in place until 6am on Monday, January 6.

Previously the yellow warning for ice on Saturday covered the whole of Scotland but has since been updated to just the north of the country, starting around the Inverness area.

The forecaster said Scots should expect some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths along with the potential for some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

There is also a weather alert for snow in Shetland on Saturday.

For Sunday a yellow alert for ice and snow covers most of the east coast with some of the central belt and the west missing out.

Come Monday snow and ice is forecast for the north east and parts of the central belt, while an alert for snow has been issued for the Scottish Borders.

With snow forecasted for parts of Scotland over the weekend, the Met Office said there is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.

It also warned there is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off and that there is a chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers.

Rail and air travel could also face delays and cancellations.
